About the journal

Solaris Journal was started because most writing about solar power falls into one of two camps. Either it is technical documentation aimed at engineers, or it is marketing copy dressed up as journalism. Neither serves the reader who wants to understand what is actually happening on their roof, on their bill or in their local grid.

The articles here are written for people who want the honest version. That means acknowledging when a technology is impressive, when the payback is genuinely great, and equally when a product is overhyped or a financial calculation has been quietly padded. Nothing on this site is sponsored and there are no affiliate deals with installers.

The topics we cover include residential solar panels, batteries, inverters, utility scale projects, the underlying physics, the policy landscape and the rapidly moving frontier of new cell chemistries. Some articles are quick practical guides. Others are longer essays meant to be read with a cup of coffee.
