Solar Panel Maintenance: What You Actually Need to Do
Solar systems are famously low maintenance, but low is not zero. Here is what to do and what to safely ignore.
One of the great selling points of solar is that there are no moving parts. That is true, but it does not mean a set-and-forget system will always perform at its best. A little routine attention keeps the numbers on your monitoring app looking healthy for decades.
Cleaning is the first question everyone asks. In most temperate climates with regular rain, panels self-clean well enough that you never need to touch them. In dusty environments, coastal areas with salt spray, or places with heavy pollen, a gentle wash once or twice a year can recover three to five percent of lost output. Use lukewarm water, a soft brush and no detergent. Do this early in the morning when panels are cool to avoid thermal shock.
Never spray cold water on a hot panel in the middle of the day. Thermal shock will not shatter the glass under normal circumstances, but it can create micro cracks in the cells that reduce output over time. If you can only clean at midday, wet the panels gradually and gently rather than blasting them with a hose.
Pressure washers deserve a warning. It is tempting to reach for one because the panels look impressive after a strong jet, but the seal around the frame is not designed for water at that pressure. Repeated pressure washing can force moisture into the laminate and cause delamination years later. Stick to gentle flow and a soft brush.
The second question is monitoring. Every modern inverter reports production in real time to an app or web portal. Check the daily total once a week for the first three months so you learn what normal looks like for your system. After that a monthly glance is plenty. If a string suddenly drops fifteen percent below its neighbours on a clear day, something has changed and it is worth investigating.
Set a mental baseline for peak power on a clear noon in each season. In summer you should regularly see peak output within a few percent of the inverter's AC rating. In winter you may only see forty or fifty percent of that under the low sun angle. Anything that drifts below your seasonal baseline for weeks at a time is worth a closer look.
Mounting hardware deserves an inspection every couple of years. The rails and clamps live outdoors in every kind of weather. Loose bolts or corroded flashings will not stop the panels working, but they will eventually let water into the roof. A quick visual check from a ladder, or with a decent zoom lens from the ground, catches problems long before they matter.
Wildlife is a surprisingly common cause of maintenance calls. Squirrels chew cable insulation. Pigeons nest under panels and their droppings clog gutters. Bees occasionally build hives inside inverter enclosures. A once yearly inspection catches all of this before it becomes a real problem. Critter guards, which are simple mesh strips that clip around the perimeter of the array, are a cheap and highly effective preventive measure.
The inverter is the part of the system most likely to fail. Modern string inverters are rated for around fifteen years of continuous service. Microinverters and optimisers usually carry twenty five year warranties. Keep the area around the inverter clear so it can breathe, and do not build a shelf over it. Heat is what shortens their life.
Firmware updates on modern inverters happen automatically over the internet, but they occasionally fail if your home network changes. Every few months, log into the manufacturer's portal and confirm the inverter is still online and reporting. A silent inverter is one of the more common quiet failures, and if you only look at production numbers monthly you can lose weeks of output before noticing.
Trees grow. A shading pattern that did not exist when the system was installed can appear five years later. If your neighbour lets a hedge get away, or a nearby oak throws a new limb over your roof, output will fall. Prune where you can and consider adding optimisers to affected strings if pruning is not an option.
Snow removal is a topic that divides installers. In most snow climates it is not worth the risk of getting on the roof to clear panels because they will shed on their own within a day or two. Never use a metal shovel on the glass. If you must clear snow, a soft roof rake from the ground is the safest tool, and even that should be used with restraint.
Every five to seven years, book a professional inspection. A qualified installer with a thermal camera can spot hot cells that are producing less than they should but are not yet visible on the monitoring app. That inspection typically costs a few hundred euros and often catches issues that pay for themselves several times over.
Beyond these basics there is very little to do. Enjoy the fact that you have made an investment that quietly delivers for twenty five years while you get on with your life.
